Toledo: three faiths on one hill
The old capital an hour south: a cathedral, a synagogue and a mosque within the same walls, and El Greco where he painted. Most tours pair the monuments with free time in the maze of streets.
Segovia: a Roman aqueduct, a fairy-tale castle

El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen

Flamenco, up close
Flamenco was born in Andalusia, but its oldest tablaos are in Madrid — Corral de la Morería opened in 1956 and still runs nightly. The rooms are small on purpose: a few dozen seats, a guitarist, a singer, and dancers close enough to hear the floor. Shows with dinner run longer; the late sittings are where the playing loosens.

July and August run to 35–40°C by mid-afternoon and the city empties into the shade — which is what the museums, the tabernas and the tablaos are for. The Prado and Reina Sofía stay cool and dim, a wine cellar cooler still, and a covered-market lunch beats the pavement every time.
