Strolling through the Retiro Park from our Madrid Apartments


When staying in Madrid apartments you can spend a lovely afternoon strolling through The Jardines del Buen Retiro, the city of park of Madrid. Literally translated, the name means Park of the Pleasant Retreat, and it is true to it's name, it's also known as the Lungs of Madrid. Central Madrid is small, so when staying in Madrid apartments you won't be far from the Retiro Park.

Over 300 acres of parkland, just a short walk from the Prado museum, the park is in easy reach from many of our Madrid apartments offered by Loving Madrid Apartments. The park has sculpture, manicured areas, galleries, monuments, a palace and a fabulous boating lake.

As a grand spectacle near the entrance to the park is the monument to King Alfonoso XII, a series of columns in a semi-circle with a the King himself on horseback overlooking the boating lake, known as the Estranque del Retiro, simply Retiro Pond. Enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the lake by renting a rowing boat when staying in our Madrid apartments.

The beautiful rose garden, Roselada, is a sea of over 4000 roses of more than 100 varieties, with sweet smells and rich colours if you are there when in bloom. Contrasting with this wonder, in this garden is said to be the only known statue of the devil, El Angel Caído, the Fallen Angel. A monument on public display since in 1878, its sculptor Ricardo Bellver was inspired by Miltens Paradise Lost.

The Paseo de las Estatuas, or Avenue of Statues is a boulevard of Baroque statues of the monarchies of Spain dating from 18th century. The statues include Alfonso I of Aragon, Carlos I of Spain and Chantila the Visigoth King of Hispania. Our Madrid apartments provide an ideal base for strolling through the park pathways.

The Palacio Cristal, was inspired by the Crystal Palace in London. Built in 1887 as a house to display species of plants from what was then the Spanish colony of the Philippines, however today the palace is home to contemporary art exhibitions. The Fuente de la Alcachofa, or Artichoke Fountain was designed by Ventura Rodriguez in 1776, the sculpture was completed in 1782. The granite fountain consists of a bronze artichoke at the pinnacle out of which pours water. Supporting the artichoke and its leaves are four cherubs, that stand in a wide cup into which the water flows. From there the water cascades to the base where Triton and a nymph.

The Casita del Pescador or Fishermans House is a delightful folly created in the 1820's with a grotto and an artificial hill, to produce a cascade of water from a waterwheel.
